It almost seems like the DAC either didn't like the transport or didn't like the line stage it interfaced. That's my only real explanation for the sonic disparity. The unit I had briefly was run into a Sonic Euphoria transformer line stage, and took a Toslink signal from the JVC XL-Z1050 CD player as a transport. Other items such as DC offset can affect sound. A defective unit is another outside possibility.
