The non-laid back Bel Canto CD-1

I just recently purchased a Bel Canto CD-1 sight/ears unseen/unheard. I did so basically because the 1/2 price sale ... people tell various tales about the sale, don't ask me what the true story is! ... superficially met my desire for a "serious" player at a deep discount; needless to say I thought I was going to have to hit the used market.

Anyway my main reservation was concern that it would be too laid back since I saw a review of the new DAC3 (6moons I think) that hinted at such a presentation. Such a quality wouldn't have worked for me as I was after something that would make a good stable mate for my LP setup with a new Benz Micro Reference 3 cartridge which I most certainly wouldn't call laid back especially with it's to-die-for bass performance.

In the end however after more than a few converstions with my dealer (Mr Underwood HiFi, i.e. Wally) I decided to give the CD-1 a go and I can report I'm glad I did! The CD-1 is a chameleon par excellence and I'm at a loss to ascribe to it any specific sonic signature; I suppose if I had a bunch of $5,000+ plays to compare I'd have better luck.

If the program has powerful bass content then it is served up in full measure, a massive relief as that was a must. It also throws a great soundstage (including great depth if the material has it), yields sonic images with realistic weight and density, can distinguish the subtlest of timbral shades, is smooth and free of any grit/grain/glare (and thank goodness doesn't sound "hard"), and even makes the best of lesser material... in short a dream machine; to tell the truth it strikes me as a sort of spooky quiet turntable!

The irony is that while an upgrade in my LP playback necessitated the CD player upgrade I've been so infatuated by the shockingly good performance of the CD-1 that I've all but ignored LPs since getting it, and this is moving into weeks now!

If there's a negative I'd say I imagine the average $5,000 player would likely beat it a beauty contest. Oh well, perhaps it will grow on me.

Oppps, gotta come clean... If the material is laid back then that's how it will sound, otherwise...
