Behringer SRC2496 on the blink

Nice unit, bought new last year and still under warranty, but it seemed to give up the ghost the other day, partly at least.

Here is the text I sent the warranty dept. They gave me a RA number for repairs but was wondering if anyone knows of a user-enabled fix (ie without opening it up) that may be out there. TIA.
----------------

"Red 'Error' light is on when unit is receiving a valid Optical signal or RCA digital signal (have not tried a Balanced signal as I do not have a Balanced source). This light appears at power on and when mode is Sample Rate Conv. Even if mode is selected as A/D-D/A Conv, power on/off activates the Sample mode and error light comes on. If I switch it back to A/D-D/A mode, then error light is off but Source and Sample Rate switches do not do anything (all lights in those areas are off) and repeated pressing of switch has no result. No sound is passed from either digital or analog outs in any of the modes or with any combination of buttons pressed. Headphone output is also non-functional."
