Hey Jim, at $300 you might consider a first generation Cambridge 540c or 640c (if you get a deal on a demo or used one,) for transport duties. They use a Sony transport/laser. The guys at SpearitSound urged me to give one a try for transport duties and I've been very pleased with it in that capacity. I've tweaked it with additional vibration damping material on the casework and transport to good effect. An excellent bargain digital cable is the StereoVox HDVX, a real overachiever at at $150.00 retail.
