Connecting it to your preamp or amp allows current to flow through the output jacks (and cable). 100 hrs of total time should get you most of the way there -- either by on continuous run or multiple short burns.The amp or preamp does not have to be on.
I am not sure how Slomo knows about the effectiveness of his suggested technique.
