Accuphase DP-55 - still a relevant player or not anymore?

89.216.145.249

Hi everyone,

I have just been offered a DP-55 for $1300. It had several owners but appears to be in a good shape and comes with an original box and remote.

I am tempted although I haven't had any experience with this machine.

My concern is its age and serviceability. How much would it cost to exchange its laser? Is it also prone to other failures?

I am looking for a player capable of swinging between fine, sophisticated tone and a decent but non-agressive PRaT (more as an ability to involve a listener into a piece).

It shouldn't have any trace of digital sound even if it means sacrificing an absolute resolution.

It should be more of an universal player in sense it doesn't prefer one or another kind of music, as it should competently play Wagner, bluegrass, Dylan, TLC, Sufjan Stevens and Gorecki.

Would 8-10 years old Accuphase player be a wise buy when I can purchase Quad 99 for similar or Rega Apollo for much less, also Njoe Tjoeb, Eastern Sound E-5 and a number of other good CDPs? My best audiophile friend claims nothing can come even close to it for this money from modern players.

As I am not very keen on changing gear very often, would it survive next 10 years?

My other thoughts were Avondale moded Arcam and Naim players but it seems they are unknown here in the US.

I apologize if some of my concerns seem stupid but that was straight from my heart:)

Thanks

Zex
