Serious disc tray problem or cheap fix?

When I push "Eject" on my CD player--a Teac VRDS 25--the disc tray opens and immediately closes, all in one smooth motion. So I can no longer actually play any discs.
At first the problem only occurred when I used the "Eject" button on the player itself. Now it also occurs when I use the remote.
Anyone encountered this before? Is it as simple as cleaning some electronic contacts or is it potentially a more serious and expensive-to-fix problem?
