Re: CD choice Ayre CX7e vs ARC CD3 MKII vs Meridian G08

I can't say much about the ARC. Its output voltage is higher than the 2V/4V standard. Thus, we had troubles with the ARC preamp's volume control, which was too loud, even at the MIN values.

The Ayre certainly sounds good across the board. Dunno if this is an issue with you, but as it didn't have the "time remaining" function, we didn't keep it long.

On Digital Asylum, I've written plenty about the Meridian G08. Do a search. But basically, I absolutely must warn you about its 19-second load time. The G08 uses a DVD drive. And as you know with DVDs, they take forever to load. There's nothing wrong with the G08's sound. But in the long run, because the G08 made us wait 19 seconds to play a CD, what happens is that we end up not using the G08 at all. The bottom line is, we just want to get on with the music. If we're going to wait 19 seconds, we'd rather play records. We sold the G08, and nobody misses it.

Shopping for high-end CD players is frustrating. For this kind of money, we should expect perfection, when it comes to aesthetics, ergonomics, and compatibility. Sadly, many CD players fail in these regards. I'm still looking...
