I recently replaced my CD23 with an Audio Aero Prima. While the CD23 was no slouch, the Prima betters it in several subtle ways. Instruments just sound more "right". The Prima is very smooth and easy to listen to for hours. A used one might fit your budget. I would try to find a newer used one with the Sony transport.
