Here is the deal, I currently own an Adcom gcd-750 that is having "issues" reading discs lately. I run it with a Unison Research unico se with Triangle Zephyr II speakers.
I am an old Dead Head who has seen quite a bit of live music in my time and the part of the music that really hits my sweet spot is the growl that a stratocaster makes when overdriving it's amplifier tubes. That mid bass region where bass guitar and lower register guitar strings meet right in your stomach.
My system as is really gets me groovin' nicely lots of authority and punch. BUT the Adcom is threatening to die. So I went and got an Rega apollo to audition for the weekend. I must say that it does ALOT of things better that my adcom and it was seducing me with it's magic (detail, imagery, and wonderful midrange presentation that allowed me to believe that drum kits were in my living room) but I wasn't convinced. Played one last Dave Matthews tune and then put the adcom in and played the same tune (Gravedigger). On the apollo, I could hear the bass and the guitar interplay, but on the adcom I could FEEL it driving me. As seductive as the Apollo might be, I can't buy it. It doesn't rock me.
So I am looking for some suggestions where to look next. My ability to audition stuff in home is severely limited in pittsburgh so I have to choose wisely.
Thanx
