Skipping Adcom Player

I have an older Adcom single disc player that skips a bit. It is worse toward the beginning of discs. It primarily is a skip that acts like it doesn't want to keep advancing and tries to repeat brief segments.
I am not well versed in how a CD player operates. But I'm wondering if there may be some simple service that may help. Could the photo eye be dirty? If so, how does one clean it? Could the slide mechanism the eye runs on be sticky? Again, how would one lubricate or fix this?
I do not feel this player is worth a trip to a repair shop, but hope there might be some simple checks I could try myself.
