I have been enjoying my NAD 541i for years, but felt it lacked something that an outboard DAC might offer. So I bought a Zhaolu DAC and have just been burning it in this week with the NAD as the transport. The combo works great to my ears!What this tells me is that you might do well with even an older but sturdy CDP from that list as transport. Some of what you listed would be more expensive because you're paying the price of a newer one-box unit with its own DAC intended for use as a stand alone. I'm clear that you needn't pay that extra price just to get a good transport for a good DAC.
That's all I have to offer and I realize it's limited experience, but I did glean it from researching the archives here.
