The way you described the sound of the 840C as slightly lean and forward is exactly the way I heard it with its original footers.
There is something magical about Herbie's Tenderfooters. I don't know why it works so well, maybe because its made to absorb frequences at which audio equipment vibrates. I really don't know. The Tenderfoot do more than just change the 840C to a warmer tonality because I'm hearing more audio information as if the upsampling is now allowed to work optimally.
