Very interesting, I use a mini dac into a fi -y, and then into my shindo montille.I got adapters from guitar center by HOSA, seem to work well, but I'd be interested in hearing about transformer use.
FWIW, I felt that bypassing the external volume control, was a nice improvement - seemed to improve top end air and low end articulation. You can do this easily with the internal jumpers but you may run into gain issues, but it's easy to change back.
Have only tried battery briefly, seemed to help but too much of hassle for me.
