Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Yes, and my recent experience

Yes, and here's my recent experience. I just realized I'm guilty of simply blaming lousy audio on the source (cdp/dac), rather than making sure it isn't the cd itself. I made several comparisons with an excellent cdp (Cary 306/200), a mid level dvd player (Pioneer DV525, modded), and a cost effective dac (Lite Dac AH modded for battery power). The cd was a 1987 re-master (ADD) of an original 1974 vinyl recording. Initially, I had not listened to this recording in years. I guess that was the reason I gave up on hifi. Anyway, I randomly pulled this cd from the stack. Through the 525 alone, which I had just modified, I was very disappointed. This not the wonderful music I heard before the modifications. The high vocals were almost unlistenable, very harsh, even screeching. Then I hooked the 525 with the Dac AH. No discernable difference. Still screechy vocals. As a last resort, I removed these and replaced with the 306/200 alone. I was sure I would really hear a difference, but I didn't. Finally, I connected the Dac AH to it. Surely this would remove the harshness. I was amazed, it was still there. My opinion? A good (resolving) system is only as good as the the ultimate source, the cd.
