Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Re: For what it's worth...

I have a 640C v1, doing duty in a pretty mid-fi system. There aren't a ton of options at exactly this price point, and I think that it's very good for where it's at. However, it's pretty much true that the more you spend, the better you get. The NAD C542, Arcam CD73T and Rotel RCD-1072 are some obvious choices in the next higher bracket up, and may or may not be worth spending the extra for, depending on your system. Of course, you can also find used players at that $400 price that would outclass the 640C too.

At the price I wanted to pay, which was at that lower level (got mine for $450 CDN), I think the CA is doing just fine. Having said that, I actually regret not doing something different: I wish I would've put the same money into a DAC. Maybe something like the Channel Islands VDA-1. See, my CD's sound great, but I also run audio through my computer (has S/PDIF out), and it doesn't sound as hot. If I would've bought a DAC instead of a CD player, I'd have better sound for more sources. Kind of a no-brainer now, huh?

Wish I would've... Anywho, maybe you would also like to consider a DAC?
