"Unable to read" means it won't display tracks and timing when you load a disc, that is, won't read the TOC? If so, I'm looking at a similar repair myself, and I'm part way down the road at the moment.It wouldn't hurt to have the lens carefully cleaned in the shop, or at least try a lens cleaning disc (the kind with the two soft brushes glued to the data surface), if you haven't done that already.
Has the player been in service long enough that it might need a new laser? Ageing parts and solder joints in the servo circuitry can also contribute to this problem, I'm told.
