Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Re: So what are the SA11's weaknesses

I guess the Denon 3910 was not designed and constructed like the Marantz SA11 so mods in general are more worthwhile. The Marantz was made to be a hi-end machine and it uses pretty much premium components throughout so a lot of mods would be to replace premium components with another bland of premium components. Of course if the entire analogue section of the SA11 after the DAC is replaced then it will make a big difference in sound, but more likely a change to the sound taste, unless the new analogue section is of truly reference grade. e.g. If you add a tube output you need to know that nothing is changed except that a tube buffer is added to the end to put in some even order harmonics (i.e. some distortions that are nice to many ears) that can usually smooth the sound a lot but muddy it at the same time. Some people like it and some hate it. I am of the opinion that the CD player should be as accurate as possible and if you want tube sound choose your tube preamp.

Funny, although I have ordered the parts, the SA11 sounds better day by day (of course still not as smooth as other players) and overall it is quite good. I am now wondering that if the SA11 continues to improve at this rate then in 3 months time I may not even want to mod it. It makes me wonder if I should mod it at all.
