Technics SL-P1200 vintage CD player problems

Hello:

I just picked up a neat old Pro CD player made by Technics. It is their model SL-P1200, a "classic" machine, but this one was made in 1990.

I noticed that the player only plays some but not all commercial discs. I was puzzled about why this was happening. Originally, I thought it had to do with the number of tracks on a disc, but I do not think that is the cause of the apparent problem.

I know that the machine will NOT play cdrs, but I do not care about that aspect right now.

Is there a gross difference between discs manufactured in the late eighties and early nineties which accounts for this?

Or, are some discs adherant to RED BOOK standards and others not, causing them to play or not play, accordingly?

Any suggestions or help is appreciated.

One final question: a portion of the back-lit upper section on the deck lights up but the area where there is a "flow-chart" does not.

Does this machine use LEDS for illumination or incandescent miniatures?

I only opened up the deck enough to peer inside and did not remove any connecting cables to explore it further, but I will.

Thanks!
