The 99 CDP-2 has a built in preamp so you can bypass the preamp and go direct to the power amp (Alternately, you can use a preamp or integrated). No, you can't run it into speakers directly. I am surprised you heard anything. The power amp provides the electrical poop to move the mechanical parts that make the sound in the speaker.
