I'd strongly recommend a Beresford TC-7510 Mk.II DAC. Around $200 I think. He's a small UK-based manufacturer, and IME this DAC can compete with others at many times the price. Open & detailed? - you got it! Needs to run in for a few days though. I think he also offers a refund if you don't like it. Available on eBay or thru his own Site at http://www.homehifi.co.uk/products/TC-7510.html. Drop him a line to make sure you can get it for US voltage.
