Jon's response is accurate. ASRC stands for asynchronous sample-rate conversion. Asynchronous means that the input and output clocks run independently. Most implemenations of it are to 96 or 192 kHz, in the case of the Benchmark, it's 110 kHz.

The reason why I sold the DAC1 I once had was due to sonic quirks I suspect was a byproduct of ASRC- Every time I listen to rigs that utilize ASRC, I pick up on a narrow band of HF noise that in time (15 to 30 minutes) becomes so annoying, I have to shut it down. (I suspect this sonic quirk may be caused by converting jitter to noise. See link.) And I've yet to hear such a rig that I thought was either devoid of this problem or where the noise wasn't objectionable.
