The unit itself does have the pause function by simply pushing teh play button.

I think I know what is "wrong" with your remote. When installing the batteries, the compartment is too tight and the batteries do not make contact. You have to make sure the batteries are making contact by sliding them down (bottom of remote) as far as possible. In fact, there is now a small note that comes with these players that explains this as well.

The unit is basically off when the red light is on. When you hit the on button on the remote, th eunit powers up and the light turns to blue. Hit the button again, and the units shuts off and goes red again. If you push the buttonm on the unit when it is one, it turns off completely and this buttom must be pushed to turned the player on again before being able to use the remote.
