Time to get a new digital source... suggestion please

Hi,
last night my Pioneer DV-525 died. I was using it as a dvd player and a cd transport (with a Monarchy DIP and a MSB Link DAC). I would like to get another to replace it.
My budget would be less than 1000$. I would like it to be a very good transport. Good picture quality is a must. I don't have a high definition TV yet but such capability from the DVD would be nice to have for future upgrade. DVD recording would also be a nice feature so I could get rid of my old VHS.
Any suggestions?
