VLC is best for video and pretty good for audio. Media Player Classic is also very good for video, but VLC has more functionality around sub-titles. Both knock spots off of Microsoft Media Player of any ilk.WinAmp is great for audio only and will play FLAC and SHN with plug-ins.
Haven't tried Foobar but have heard excellent reports, but WinAmp has proved more than adequate for me.
I use an IBM Thinkpad PIII.
