Out of the box (unmodded), I thought the 4960 sounded good with redbook (definitely better than my old Denon CD player, Onkyo CD player and a Pioneer Elite CD changer with 24bit Legato Link). I recall it sounded better than what I anticipated based off its looks (small cheap looking unit).... smaller than the 3950!
I tried a few SACDs (2 channel only... The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, Derek & Dominos-Layla) and immediately noticed the improvement with sound (more rich fuller, in-person sounding). I figured the 4960 was at least able to show off the qualities of good sounding SACDs.
I purchased it as a temporary unit just to try out SACD. It cost $79 shipped- there were a few noticable scratches on the face so I was given an additional 20% discount.
I enjoy the bypassing opamp sound of my modded 3950, so, I'll probably do the same for the 4960.
Pros: Good sound, inexpensive, plays SACD,DVD-A, also played one my known problematic CDs (pinholes) without a glitch, has both types of digital out (optical), info for modding exists on internet.
Cons: - build quality looks very cheapo (no surprise due to cost).
-Hate the remote (2 second delays on some functions?)
- don't like the little round function buttons on the unit,
- when playing SACD-it displays SACD just for a few seconds then displays CD-- that's how they do it (would help if they would just display "SACD").
If you're considering purchasing something, the only recommendation I would offer is make sure you have the option to return whatever you buy for a full-refund. The only meaningful listening test is the one you do in your listening area with your own equipment.
