Stan Warren mods Pioneer dv-333 with results that people rave about, comparing the modded player to players in the $2500 range. I haven't heard one myself, but I did just send my dv-333 off to Stan based on what people have said here (look in the archives).
dv333 $200 + stan warren mods $250 = about 475 with shipping and tax = best cd player under 500 that I'm aware of, and will also play DVDs. Good luck.
