I too have the Cat5 cables. I didn't go the CVH route, but did a somewhat simpler version, which was:
1) Belden Cat5 cable (their best I think), twice as long as end length.
2) strip the outside sheathing off.
3) Double up the cable, put the end in a vise (or in my case a board nailed to my workbench)
4) Braid
5) braid
6) braaaiiddd
7) Pull apart end pairs (ouch!) and strip 2 or 3".
8) Match whites and colors together
9) twist twist twist
10) tin tin tin
11) Stuff as well as possible into RS banana plugs.I have to say I auditioned a highly recommended pair of AlphaCore flat cables and in comparison to the cat5, well, I sent the Alpha's back.
I can't imagine a better sounding cable, so I think these are keepers.
