Empiricism vs Rationalism

I find that cable cable differences ARE generally more subtle than component differences. However, the premise that changing low tech passive components will ALWAYS have minor effect does not ring true with my experience. Generally speaking, I do buy components first, and then use the cables that sound the best with those components. I don't feel limited. I would feel more limited if I only purchased cables and components that worked according to my pre-existing model of how things should work. Instead, I listen first, (before I read reviews!), and then I buy according to what sounds best to me. I grant that that this is very subjective, but it grants me a more satisfying experience than reading spec sheets. The best part of all is that I allow myself to learn from my listening sessions, and to fine-tune my system to my tastes. Rationalism is great fun, and I commend your practice of it. But I also recommend that you put aside your arguments and just listen sometimes too.
