I don't know if it's due to skin effect but I notice that different gauges of the same series of solid core wires from the same manufacturer sound different as though they have a slightly different equalization applied.Quite contrary to what most people say, I notice that smaller gauge (thicker wire) solid core has less bass than a larger gauge (thinner) wire. I find gauges between 22 to 26 the most balanced. I use several parallel runs of these thinner wires (individual insulation intact) to get enough overall thickness for use as speaker cables. I normally braid them in a counter 8 configuration like the old phone lines which reduces RF, EMI and inductance very well
