I tend to agree with those not recommending retermination, especially if you like the sound now. Not sure why this would happen unless the casing was some sort of heat-reactive material like heat shrink.
Unless you move them around a lot, several layers of the 4:1 heat shrink suggested by WntrMute2 should be enough coverage to protect the ends.
If you can't stand it, then the spades recommended by Duster are good ones.
