Tara Labs RSC Master Gen 2, Part 10

During the Fall of 1994, the cancellation of the MLB season was a bummer. But that just meant more attention for the NBA, NFL, and NHL. In a somewhat melancholy fashion, Bo Jackson, then a member of the California Angels, announced his retirement.

At the same time, with Real McCoy's "Another Night," Eurodance became established in the U.S. It even was played at arenas.

And just in time to capitalize on the Eurodance craze, Tara Labs came out with their RSC Master Gen 2 interconnect.

Of course, you talked about which superpower you'd like to have. But one of my friends, who was wearing blue-tinted contacts, announced that, just once, she wanted to be able to snap a baseball bat across her thigh, a la Bo Jackson.

Then we turned our attention back to audio. At the time the RSC Master Gen 2 came out, I already had the similarly-priced AudioQuest Lapis. I don't know if the Master Gen 2 and Lapis had superpowers, but here's where neither emerged as a winner or loser. We had to admit that, while you may have had a preference, you could not honestly declare one superior to the other. Chalk it up to another "different but equal" comparison.

My friend above took two chunks of bubble gum (no, not Big League Chew). She chewed and chewed and chewed. She then stretched the gum tall and wide, and then blew a bubble. That was her way of describing how the RSC Master Gen 2 handled soundstaging, It had very good height and width, decent depth. But the images, instead of being a thick and full-bodied Bo Jackson, were a bit diaphanous.

In the mid-treble, the RSC Master Gen 2 was less present, but cleaner. The RSC Master Gen 2 appeared less fizzy in the background. But the Lapis' midrange was more breathy. Both were, in absolute terms, mildly soft in the midbass.

Then we compare the RSC Master Gen 2 to today's ISM OnBoard The 0.8. The latter raises the roof, and knocks down the walls. With all of the air and light shining through, you are now free to explore each and every recording. The 0.8 reveals the RSC Master Gen 2's softer punch, veiling, and reduction of grip, speed, body, and power. No, the 1994 MLB season has not resumed, but you do feel as though you can snap a baseball bat over your thigh.

The 0.8 is superior, comes much closer to the ideal of having NO sonic signature. But at 8-10 times the price of the RSC Master Gen 2, it better! When you play Real McCoy's "Another Night," the RSC Master Gen 2 recalls the more innocent times of 1994. You and your friends were stoked, that Eurodance had become mainstream. As a young woman being presented with either the AQ Lapis or Tara Labs RSC Master Gen 2, you felt like getting to choose between two quality guys, and with no other girls to beat out!
