Nice job, Dave Garretson; glad to see folks experimenting with DIY usb cable projects. BTW, the characteristic impedance of a usb digital interface is 90 ohms. Not sure what the tolerance is, but a 110 ohm AES/EBU digital twisted pair involves a rather wide-ranging tolerance; lots of wiggle-room vs. the strict tolerance of a 75 ohm S/PDIF digital coaxial interface, for example.
I'm actually getting into usb for audio puroses for the first time, since until now I have only used my iMac digital optical output port for an A/V sound distribution system. I ordered a humble if not high-value usb DAC/headphone amplifier that I'll feed with an upgraded 12VDC linear power supply to drive a pair of Grado SR100 with HP-1000 drivers headphones (red lettering version), mostly for quiet-time listening hours. First usb cable upgrade will be a Belkin Gold Series usb cable with better-optimized wire gauges. It's a well-regarded low-cost audiophile-quality usb cable vs. typical consumer electronics marketplace usb cables. Some end-user reports indicate the Belkin Gold Series usb cable presents a notably musical and dynamic sonic signature, especially at the bottom-end, that I would like to implement for the Grados. I expect I'll get the bug to build some DIY usb cables, too.
