There are many factors involved in this general question. I am convinced shorter wires are better, period. The wire is seen as a load to the driving component so the issue becomes how much inductance, capacitance, and resistance is acceptable for your components to drive without affecting the signal. If the speaker cables are too long, and the wire gauge is inadequate, you could encounter high frequency roll-off. Likewise, your preamp may not be capable of driving very long interconnects, especially if it is a passive unit. Certain cables are not suitable for long runs, like speaker cables designed for ultra-low inductance at the expense of high capacitance. Noise is another issue as one poster indicated. Balanced ICs will be more resistant of noise issues if your gear is fully balanced.
For typical amps and cables with typical L/C/R values, your 10-foot long SCs should be fine. Cables in the range of about 12 feet or less (both IC and/or SC) are typically within an acceptable range sonically, for most active equipment and typical cables. There are always exceptions as well as folks who can perceive small sonic differences so YMMV.
