Hey Stu, have you had a chance to look at those wires under 800x? I think that if you do you'll find that they all have micro-abrasions on the surface even the ones that are 'polished'.
This is Neotech wire, same thing used by Harmonic Tech and Acoustic Zen and my understanding is that it is drawn with diamond dies. To the naked eye it looks mar free/ mirror finish. I read your theory on why but that would exclude a wire that is OCC w/o the typical amount of crystal structure.
Since directionality primarily affects the high/highest frequency response it makes sense that the cause would be at the surface of the wire were that signal travels, not farther into the center of the wire.
Probably what you’re seeing on the older KCAG is a bit of tarnish. I’ve stripped 4TC before to find the copper has been oxidized.
