Because they are both balanced designs, the Calypso matches well to the X250.5. They also physically match each other, so the combination is very attractive. The only objection might be the stock 12AX7 tubes could be improved upon with NOS tubes that have fuller body, less brightness in highs. Very good recordings sound quite good.
That said, even though the CJ CT-5 is single-ended, it has even better bass, smoother highs, and even bigger soundstage. CJ preamps in general have enough DC offset to create a small pop upon amp turn on, that pushes the woofers out momentarily; and I don't like that. The gain needs to be turned up high for the CJ as well. I measured the DC in the CT-5; and, while fairly low, it's not low enough to avoid this. I think it is just their design. The Calypso has no DC issues.
I have discovered that the X250.5 sounds much better after 2-3 hours warmup, than the one hour Pass claims. The highs smooth out and the whole sound picture congeals better.
