Home Cable Asylum

Interconnects, speaker wire, power cords. Ask the Cable Guys.

The Answer is... And an interesting change...

Hey JimBop,

I picked up a pair of fluid-filled Proteus (Purist Audio) cables. Problem was, the fluid had leaked, and the previous owner had used—you guessed it—duct tape to try to stem the flow. Well, they' looked pretty shabby and the pig tails were splitting, so I sent them to Purist for a $250 refurb job.

What I got back was essentially a new cable. In fact, I am not convinced that it is not completely new. New sleeves all around. Even the spades were like new.

Here's the interesting part. With no fluid, the bass was dramatically enhanced. Detail was good, but back in the soundstage. After maybe 24 hours of listening to the refurbished cable, I can say the emphasis has moved up to the midrange from the pronouced bass.

Detail and separation have improved, and there is a a realness in vocals, guitar and keyboards that was not there before. BUT, that big ass exaggerated bass is gone. Heck, I kind of liked it that way! But I was looking to get better detail and focus, so that has been accomplished.

I just fired up my Velodyne ULD-15 II subwoofer, and that has blended seamlessly, so I have a net gain.

Overall, I have a very natural sounding system, very musical. The increased accuracy in vocals allows me to hear a little gravel in Willie Nelson's voice. k.d. lang has never sounded better.

Great discussion. I'm glad the bored didn't bounce the orginal post for questioning the whole premise.
