Hey King,I am listening to Little Feat this morning on a refurbished set of $3,000 Purist Audio Proteus cables and they have made a noticeable difference in the sound quality. But you don't have to spend a lot to make a difference.
I felt very much the way you do after reading a great deal of material from respected individuals in the audio industry, but after trying a quality speaker cable, the impact was so instant and dramatic I could not deny my ears.
My system has evolved with high quality gear, and I certainly would agree that will make or break your system more than cables. The greatest cable in the world won't make a dogmeat amp sound good.
That said, there is a lot of smoke, mirrors and snake oil in the industry. I have compared $1000 interconnects to $1 interconnects (literally) and heard no difference. But there are some companies and even DIY plans that have many proponents.
Some people honestly never hear a difference. They may be the lucky ones! But this morning, a 30 year old recording sounds much better than it has a right to.
In this racket, none of us ever stops learning. It's especially rewarding when, in spite of our doubts, we a rewarded with better sound.
