The AES/EBU digital interface specs out a 110 ohm impedence (with I believe a +/- 15% tolerance). XLR analog cables will be all over the map with measured impedence. While the analog XLR cable > may < work, it is most likely not optimized for digital, and will likely be inferior to a purpose-built AES/EBU cable, IMHO...
