Home Cable Asylum

Interconnects, speaker wire, power cords. Ask the Cable Guys.

shoe, cables are as much a component in your music-reproduction system as anything else.

I suppose some cables are priced using the gouge-them-all-I-can filosofy, but I believe most aren't. As already written, it's expensive to run a company that does all the research, quality control, manufacturing or supervision thereof, packaging, being good to employees, etc. and make enough profit to stay in business.

I believe the component in a music-reproduction system that has the most character, that imparts a higher degree of its own sound, is the speaker. I think the least-influential component is cables generally. (I also agree that cables do only harm, adding garbage and subtracting goodness.) But that doesn't mean the the differences among cables aren't audible, and those audible differences are quite significant to some of us.

Each of us hears differently and has different sonic priorites. I'm no Golden-Eared Audiofile who hears lots of differences, but I have heard differences among IC and speaker cables (but not among powercables). So how much am I willing to pay for the improvements I hear? That's a question I have to struggle with myself. I can tell you that I'm willing to spend c. $150 each for Tung-Sol RoundPlate 6SN7s for my amplifiers rather than $50 for Ken-Rads, and I do that because the RPs are slightly more spacious sounding than the KRs. I have cable in my system that retails for $1000/meterpair. (I didn't pay that for them, but they did cost me more than lower-retail cables.) Do they sound better than, say, the $500/MP cables? Yes, subtly.

Have you carefully listened to different ICs in your system? Heard ANY differences? If so, you have to make your choices and spend accordingly. If not, then buy the least-expensive cable that meets your requirements.

Enjoy the journey; I certainly have.
