further to tigwelds commentscable "a" degrades the signal less in the "Preamp ---- brand a ---> Amp" than it does (compared brand b) when in the "CDP----brand b---> Preamp" configuration.
probably down to input/output impedances and levels, the cable materials and it construction, inductance, capacitance, etc thus its impedance/distortion.
