While I have not used the heavier duty Vampire spades (like the BAR and HD series), I use the Vampire SPD spades (the kind sold on partsconnexion.com) and these crimp quite easily and securely using a cheap all-purpose plier, wire stripper crimp tool. I have one similar to this one from RadioShack:

and crimp on the reverse jaw side (where the pink stripes are according to the picture).If you must solder, check out the "How To Recipes" in TakeFiveAudio.com or "WorkShop" projects in Audiyo.com for tips.
