Here are some commonly suggested brands as a place to start within your price range, new. Use Google to find the home pages.

Mapleshade Golden Helix
Silver Sonic Q-10
Signal Cable Silver Resolution

It might be a good idea to try to find 'em used on Audiogon, like you had in mind, that way if you don't like what they do in your system, you can resell at a minimum loss.
