I soldered one of these some time ago. I feel for you - it was probably one of the hardest soldering jobs I ever did. The other pain part was the tiny set screw that you need to tighten when putting the casing back together.As for the configuration, I had another phono cable lying around and just used a voltmeter to see which pins were L/R and which were +/-. Unfortunately I don't remember which was which now, but perhaps you could do the same.
