Hey, you have fine gear, clearly it can resolve well enough to hear the difference in cables.CDPs and digital sources in general can be pretty cold sounding. By that I mean not as emotionally involving as analog sources.
Since you can hear what you're missing with the Kimbers (damn nice cables, BTW), there's always the chance they're imparting something rather than revealing something, you know? All the Kimbers I've used certainly have a warmth and feeling to them.
In any event, whether it's the gear or the cables doesn't matter. You have what you have. One set of ICs works for you, another doesn't. Time to look at cables.
Yeah, $1k ICs aren't in my budget either.
Have you considered DIY? Definitely cheaper than $1k, though they can get pretty pricey too, depending on the components used. I went through a small fortune in cables myself before settling on a modified ChrisVH DIY Fine Silver design. I'll share the recipe wiht you if you like. They have the resolution, body, speed, and PRaT I like - even with the Adcom gear I used to use. The sound only got better when I upgraded the gear.
