You're right, cables do have an effect on conveying the energy in a recording. Thin silver wires, for example, tend to sound "faster" than thick multistrand copper.Sounds like it could be the recording or playback medium that's lacking in conveying the energy (what analog fans call Pace Rythm And Timing - PRaT).
Have you tried other recordings? What source are you listening to?
