Home Cable Asylum

Interconnects, speaker wire, power cords. Ask the Cable Guys.

Can you borrow some cords of different types to try?

Every piece of equipment seems to have different needs when it comes to power cords. You would think that a CD player that draws little current would be insensitive to power cord gauge, but my Wadia definitely prefers 14-gauge over lighter wires.

I would start with the Volex 14-gauge shielded cord, and see if the sound is acceptable after it burns in. If so, you can easily shorten it to suit your setup and attach a nice plug without spending a lot.

Many of the serious audiophile cords are very stiff and difficult to fit into tight spots. Even if they can be bent to fit, they are so stiff that they become conduits for acoustic vibration.

The Walker Silent Source is a nice, flexible cord, but lacks the resolving power of tweaked cords on my CD player. I don't think it is shielded, but I don't know for sure.

Other inmates may have more relevant experience, especially with the inexpensive DIY cords.
