As Jeffrey has said, a multi-way speaker with active crossovers instead of passive, is more efficient (ie. there is no passive XO to "waste" amplifier power).

However, people who say "speaker designs without a XO are very desirable" are generally referring to extended-range, single-driver speakers ... like Quad electrostatics, for instance.

With one driver and no crossover, there is no phase shift between drivers ... which makes them sound terrific in the frequency range they cover. However, such single driver speakers rarely extend from, say, 30Hz to 30KHz ... so you may have to put up with a limited frequency range if you like the absence of phase shift.
