A fair amount of what you’re asking is probably considered proprietary information and thus "secret." This is one reason I’m into DIY designs and insist that the hobby part of audio also be educational in helping me understand what works and why. That said I went with Teflon bulk wire from VH Audio which has a lower dielectric than stock cords, with low dielectrics being one desirable component for cables in general. RFI rejection was another key factor for me, especially since I believe the power in my apartment building is unclean. For this reason I purchased a PS Audio power filter. I also wrapped my DIY cords with ERS cloth to help insure against RFI even further, but listening carefully for any undesirable outcomes. Geometry of the wires can also play a part in sound, and mine are simply twisted, but I never really experimented too much here.
I’m sure others will add here, but RFI rejection, dielectrics and geometry that can affects the inductance and capacitance of the cable as well as RFI rejection are probably the key factors in cables in general.
