First, for someone named "orpheus" to own a K-1000 is pure heresy...
The K-1000 are extremely demanding headphones, because of their low sensitivity. Amplification is the key to good performance and it is not a given that they'll sound good with just any big amp, especially when you judge the bass quality.
My experience with heapdphone cables is limited to a few variants for the HD-650. If it's any indication, the differences from stock are very subtle and are more a matter of personal taste than "absolute" improvements, whatever that means.
In general, I find that differences between cables and sources on a headphone systems are often hard to tell vs. the same on a speaker system. Sometimes, system "synergy" can play havoc with your auditioning, as I found recently when I compared two DACs. What sounded obviously superior (for many good technical reasons) on the speaker system was not so obvious on the headphones... Don't you love audio?! :-)
